Surgical

PDS has been providing surgical and related support services design for over 35 years.

  • In 1986 Mr. Pomarico initiated his experience in the planning and design of the Hospital for Joint Diseases first Outpatient Surgical Center. Working directly with surgeons the surgical suites were some of the first nationally to utilize overhead mounted surgical equipment booms and early robotic surgical equipment booms that were in early stages of development at the time.

  • Over time, PDS has had the opportunity to be involved in a number of other notable surgical projects. In 2002 PDS designed Hackensack UMC’s first minimally invasive robotic operating room what at the time was their first DaVinci robot. In the same year Mr. Pomarico designed one of the first fully integrated neurological operating rooms in the State of New Jersey.

  • In 2008, PDS went on to design a Mobile Surgical Suite, an operating room contained within an expanding tractor-trailer. The MSS was part of an overall design that incorporated a tractor-trailer containing a mobile emergency room and a mobile PACU. PDS designed the compilation of all these mobile assets and interconnects to form a mobile acute care hospital.

  • In 2012 PDS designed one of the first Hybrid Operating Rooms in New Jersey that employed the Siemens Zeego Robot, a large automated robotic system that manipulates the image intensifier within the surgical field, but also retracts to a parked position to accommodate the surgical field, leaving the 3D space over the table clear for manipulation of lights and booms.

  • In 2014, PDS designed Deep Brain MRI facility at Hackensack UMC, the first on the East Coast to Use MRI-Guided Neurosurgical Procedure to Treat Parkinson’s Disease.

  • In 2015 PDS worked with Hackensack UMC at Pascack Valley Hospital and developed in conjunction with the Hospital’s Master Plan, a long-term plan for the expansion of their surgical services suite.

  • PDS has been featured in “Outpatient Surgery” magazine where he contributed to the article “What will your OR look like in the year 2017”, was published in Electrophysiology Digest for Catheterization Lab and Electrophysiology Lab design concepts. Mr. Pomarico presented at the 2007 Joint Commission conference on emergency disaster preparedness, and was a feature speaker at the 2010 ASHE Hospital Planning, Design and Construction Conference in San Diego California, and the 2012 Healthcare Design Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

  • PDS has recently provided planning and design services for the expansion of surgical services at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Lake Charles Louisiana. This complicated, multiphase project included master planning the expansion, relocating Central Processing to the floor below, relocating and expanding the PACU, fully renovating 4 operating rooms, adding 4 new operating rooms and renovation of the balance of the surgical suite increasing it from 11 operating rooms to 15. The project also included the renovation of a 23 bed SDS unit, creation of a new 14 bed pre-op unit and creation of a new surgical waiting room.

Hybrid OR

Renovation of the OR incorporated a Siemens Medical Systems robotic C-Arm, as well as a computer room and control desk within the Operating Room. Modifications to the Electrical systems and HVAC were also required, including a new laminar air flow system. A retro-fit of the existing OR demanded detailed planning and design integration to meet medical equipment system requirements of the space, while meeting the spatial needs of surgical staff and related equipment

Same Day Surgery

The design of the new Same-Day Surgery Unit for Lake Charles Memorial Hospital responded to the sensitive needs of the patient both in pre and post-operative states, in addition, to providing highly-precise operating rooms and support spaces to optimize surgical flow. The lighting design was given special consideration to ensure that patients and visitors had control over and that the lighting fixtures used did not give off a glare during the post-operative recovery. The operating room was designed with state-of-the-art features including laminar flow, robust finishes and amble space for surgeons to perform their work.
